As any small business owner is aware time, money, patience, research and a business plan are needed to start. Included in any plan are local people, what they want from a business, so that they will show a preference to ‘shop’ locally. Supporting a local business means supporting the local economy because independent local businesses employ a wide range services by “buying locally” themselves. They hire architects, designers, IT experts, sign makers and builders and painters. Local accountants, insurance brokers, advertising agencies help run it. Local retailers and distributors also carry a higher percentage of locally-produced goods than chains, meaning more jobs for local producers.

The local business has pride in what they offer, and are more likely to care about what you as a customer want. You are a name and a face that mean more than just money. Reputation in a local community is of vital importance and has to be earnt. When you are in need of help and advice, the answer is there in human form, not an unknown or electronically generated voice on the end of a telephone line. Personal service from a local business means adjusting themselves to the personality of the client not forcing the client to bend to the wishes of the giant.
Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by your local business. Local understanding, a friendly face and money for the local community. You know it makes sense.
